bacon & pea risotto

Pea and Bacon Risotto

I meant to get this post up earlier in the week since most people are doing their 2009 in review posts.  I think I will get that one up tomorrow with a few resolutions/goals/thoughts for the next year and decade (crazy!).  One thing that did happen in 2009 was the end of Gourmet magazine. all the hype

the BAKED brownie

Have you noticed that often times, things don’t live up to the hype?

A White Christmas. Sure it is beautiful, and I got to experience one this year with the leftover snow from the Northeast Blizzard of last week, but it also creates travel headaches and causes many people to not make it to home to their families. Continue reading

A cookie for Santa

Oatmeal Cookies

I know what you are probably thinking. “Whitney, I am cookie-d out. Christmas is in 3 days (3 days?!?) and I don’t need to hear about yet another cookie.” There have been plenty of cookie recipes floating around the blogs, some even had 12 Days of Cookies (I was impressed). But I will tell you why you need just one more recipe. Santa. Continue reading

that sparkle

Chewy Chocolate Gingerbread Cookies

The holidays have a new sorta sparkle on them this year.  I am not currently waist deep into finals.  I have a new string of jingle bells hanging from our front door.  My holiday cards are in the mail and my gifts are purchased (and wrapped!) under our tree. We leave for PA to celebrate the holidays with Dave’s family in a week where we will be met with cooking/baking in a nice kitchen, cute golden retrievers, lots of wine, and great people. Well, we went from a mild fall to full on winter this week. Negative wind chills and near 0 temps. All I can think about is constantly sipping warm tea and bundling up in cozy sweaters. I have TX friends in town this weekend and I can’t wait to show them Chicago all dressed up for the holidays. I hope you have a great weekend! Be back soon with some yummy gingerbread chocolate cookies.

I can’t take the credit…

…for these beautiful tarts.

Chocolate Pecan Tarts

Rich (Dave’s Dad) and I divided and conquered the dinner portion of the Thanksgiving meal, while Dave, his sister and his mom were in charge of the desserts. Deb (mom) and Betsy (sister) made these absolutely wonderful tarts. I simply just stole them for a picture. Can you believe that this above picture is straight out of the camera, with only a little cropping? It’s amazing what some really nice natural light can do. I love my old town high-rise apartment, but I can’t say that we get good light in it. Continue reading
