Pineapple Ginger Aqua Fresca

Chicago is hot this summer. I don’t know if it is because I have now lived in the midwest for 4 years (4! Years!) and haven’t experienced a months worth of 100+ temps, or just that I am out enjoying summer more this time around with marathon training, weekly beach volleyball games, and traveling by bike wherever possible but…Chicago is hot this summer. Watermelon Lemonade

Have you heard? It is hot. Well maybe not in Seattle or San Fran, but pretty much every other part of the US is melting. Yes, I know it is July, but Chicago confused me last summer when we barely had a day above 90 to speak of. This summer has definitely been different. Continue reading

better than DD

[if you are clicking over from the strawberry gelato picture on TS the correct link is here...sorry for the confusion]

Summer has finally arrived in Chicago.  Today, as I headed to the market at 7AM sharp, it was already 80 degrees.  As someone who spent the first 22 years of her life in Texas (and most of those summers in unbearable hot and humid Houston) I wasn’t very happy about it.  Sure I was getting pretty sick of the 50 degree and rainy days in early June, but high of 93 in Chicago on June 24th?  No thank you.  However, the one perk (pun intended) of summer’s arrival is Iced Coffee.

a commencement [and a cocktail]

The past week has been a total whirlwind. I took my last law school final, had my parents in town for 5 days, graduated from law school Sunday afternoon and started the bar review marathon called Bar/Bri Monday at 9AM. Needless to say, there has been much celebration and wonderful meals out with friends and family, but no time in my kitchen (or even to watch many TV Finales-Greys, Lost, GG). Today was also the first day where the temperature has been in the 80s in Chicago. After a long winter and damp “spring,” the warmth is much appreciated. The perfect thing for a warm sunny evening is this cocktail.

rosy rhubarb

One of my favorite things about reading a shit-ton whole bunch of food blogs and having my own is that it makes me experiment with ingredients and try recipes that I would have never thought to make on my own.  Last year when rhubarb popped up in the market and amongst the blogs I had no idea what this fruit/vegetable thing was all about. But this year I am more experimental in my ways and I knew that I wanted to give rhubarb a try.

the generosity of friends

This past weekend, I threw a party at my apartment and asked my friends to donate money as “cover” to my ACS Solider Field 10 mile page.  Really, it was just a great excuse to have some great friends over to unwind before finals (and Bar Review-gag) start.  After running 6 miles (my longest yet!) in the morning, I came home to get ready for the party.  Throughout the day the donations trickled in and I was quickly over my $400 goal.  A BIG THANK YOU to all my wonderful friends that donated.  I can’t thank you enough for your generosity, especially as a time when we are all graduating and most of us without a clear income in sight.   Continue reading
