a snow day

Chocolate Espresso Snowcaps

I don’t know where you live, but here in the Northeast, where I am visiting for the holidays, is in the process of getting WHACKED by a Blizzard.  Usually, I would be quite excited by the prospect of feet rather than mere inches of snow, but it forced us to postpone a Boxing Day Party, and cancel a trip to Boston for the Revels Show at Harvard.   Now we are just having a lazy day around the house.  And in my opinion, the best thing to do on a lazy day is bake up a batch of cookies. Chocolate Chip Cookies

September 6th. Labor Day 2010. It is hard to believe that it is already here and that summer is slowly slipping away. Surprisingly, I’m not sad to see this summer go because I feel like I made the absolute most of it. Marathon training has tanned and toned my legs (and given me pretty awesome and random sports bra/racer back tan lines on my back) and got me out on the lakefront path for many, many hours. There have been plenty patio sushi eating with my girlfriends and bike rides instead of the bus. Chicago just blossoms so much in the summer that it is hard to not pack your weeks and weekends so full that come September, you look forward to chilly days with crunchy leaves at your feet. Summer is wonderful, but really, so is Fall. Continue reading

peanut butter cookies {and a giveaway!}

Peanut Butter Cookies w/ Milk Chocolate Chunks

I can’t believe its been 8 days since I told you about these Sloppy Joes but I have a somewhat good excuse; I was working. I was placed on a temporary document review project that lasted for 60 hours from Friday-Tuesday. And let me tell you, after starring at a computer screen in an office suite halfway up a Chicago landmark for 10-11 hours straight, I couldn’t conceive of looking at my laptop at home. My reader filled, my twitter feed remained untouched, my project 365 pictures weren’t uploaded and a couple half-marathon workouts were skipped but now I’m back… Continue reading

pretty and pink

Chocolate Cupcakes w/ Raspberry Buttercream

I think Valentine’s Day falls into the “holidays that are way better as a child” category. In elementary school, I used to love to go the store to buy the box of Valentines for the class gift exchange. I will admit that I was a little boy crazy from the womb. I had 3 “boyfriends” alone in 1st grade. I would dig through the box of assorted Valentines and choose the “best” one for whatever boy I had a crush on at the time. Continue reading

millionaire’s shortbread

Ok…so I was back a day later than promised.  What can I say…I gotta little sucked into what Wiggs referred to as a vortex called wedding blogs.  Its quite overwhelming to say the least.  But what I am really here to talk about is this….

Millionaire’s Shortbread
Hello Lover [said in a Carrie Bradshaw voice]. Yes, this is another recipe from The Baked Cookbook. Yes, I am sad that I have had to return the book to the library. Yes, it is the first thing I am throwing in my shopping cart the next time I need to make an Amazon purchase. Continue reading

all the hype

the BAKED brownie

Have you noticed that often times, things don’t live up to the hype?

A White Christmas. Sure it is beautiful, and I got to experience one this year with the leftover snow from the Northeast Blizzard of last week, but it also creates travel headaches and causes many people to not make it to home to their families. Continue reading

that sparkle

Chewy Chocolate Gingerbread Cookies

The holidays have a new sorta sparkle on them this year.  I am not currently waist deep into finals.  I have a new string of jingle bells hanging from our front door.  My holiday cards are in the mail and my gifts are purchased (and wrapped!) under our tree. We leave for PA to celebrate the holidays with Dave’s family in a week where we will be met with cooking/baking in a nice kitchen, cute golden retrievers, lots of wine, and great people. Continue reading

I can’t take the credit…

…for these beautiful tarts.

Chocolate Pecan Tarts

Rich (Dave’s Dad) and I divided and conquered the dinner portion of the Thanksgiving meal, while Dave, his sister and his mom were in charge of the desserts. Deb (mom) and Betsy (sister) made these absolutely wonderful tarts. I simply just stole them for a picture. Can you believe that this above picture is straight out of the camera, with only a little cropping? It’s amazing what some really nice natural light can do. I love my old town high-rise apartment, but I can’t say that we get good light in it. Continue reading

a halloween twist

TKOs

I have been wanting to have a party. I thought about celebrating Lucy’s birthday (but some might think its weird to throw a party for a cat) or the fact that we all passed the Bar (but what if someone didn’t and I just didn’t know about it) but when I realized that Halloween was rollin’ around with no plans, I jumped on the opportunity to have a party. I have spent the past two days planning out an appetizer menu of sorts, shopping and starting the process of cooking everything but as soon as I saw these TKOs over at The Kitchn, I knew something that had to be on the list. Continue reading

crunch time

I truthfully don’t have a lot of time to talk (or spare brain cells to be creative) but it feels weird to not post for over a week.  Stupid Bar Exam.  Anyways, I made a batch of these cookies this afternoon as a study break because they are the perfect chocolate chip cookie.  The first time I made them I made the frosting that Andrea suggests and it is wonderful, but if you just want a cookie, the cookie is quite wonderful on its own.   Continue reading
